If you own or operate a neighborhood pool, it is critical that you understand the risks associated with sunken pool deck slabs.
This past Spring, we published the blog article Eliminate Pool Deck Trip Hazards Before the Summer containing the following essential info on this issue…
There are a couple very common causes for the soil washout that creates the environment for a sinking pool deck slab:
- Cracks in the pool structure leaking water into and soil and washing it out.
- Loose back-fill on sloping properties.
The first cause is pretty self explanatory. The second cause may need a little elaboration. Basically, if a pool is built on sloping property, the construction team will back-fill soil onto the side of the pool that needs it. If this soil is not compacted properly, it can start to washout over time.
Regardless of the cause, soil washout removes support from the pool deck slab and creates the condition for sinking.
As we explained in this two-part blog series…

…tripping hazards can be extremely costly, both from a legal perspective and more importantly from the perspective of basic human safety.
Ground Consolidation Services can test your pool deck for underlying soil washout (even before your slab sinks), fill the voids and lift the slabs if needed.
After your soil is repaired, you will want to get any cracks sealed that may be leaking water into soil and washing it out in order to prevent future trip hazards
