GCS recently repaired a cracked and slightly sunken unstable slab at a large warehouse in an industrial print shop. Their warehouse crew is constantly moving heavy rolls of paper around via forklift. Unstable soil caused slab damage right in the middle of a very busy section in the middle of the floor, where four separate slabs intersected.
With this 8 by 14-foot area out cordoned off, forklift traffic had to be rerouted to the point that the pace of business was adversely affected. Not to mention the fact that there was now a danger area in the warehouse that management had to worry about. Unstable slabs like this are often in danger of complete collapse. After doing their research and comparing their options, management contacted Ground Consolidation Services.
GCS performed soil testing with ground penetrating radar and a probe (dynamic cone penetrometer) to determine the extent of the damage. It turned out that there were around 3 feet (1 meter) of loose, unstable soil beneath the entire sunken area of the slab. Further collapse was definitely a possibility. GCS used Alchemy-Spetec's AP Lift 430 (a high-strength expanding polyurethane foam) to raise the slab back to level and stabilize it. The lifting/stabilizing process only took about 1 hour. The crew then performed some concrete repair with Alchemy-Spetec's Epicol INJ LV epoxy mortar to reconnect the cracked slab elements back together.
Management at the print shop was thrilled with the quick repair. The epoxy was cured in just 24-48 hours, and then they were back to business as usual!
